Fountains & Aerators

The two different types of aeration systems are surface fountains and diffuser aeration systems. Surface fountains use surface water to aerate, also adding an attractive water feature to the pond. These are powered by a submersible motor mounted in the pond.

Diffuser systems are powered by a small air compressor that is mounted on the bank. Air is pumped through weighted tubing to diffuser plates that rest along the bottom of the pond. This system aerates from the bottom of the pond up, eliminating pond stratification.

In addition to aesthetic appeal, aeration adds many biological benefits to a pond. Invasive pond vegetation and mosquitos thrive in still, stagnant aquatic environments. By increasing water flow and improving levels of dissolved oxygen, the reproductive capacity of these undesirables is greatly reduced.

Hundreds of dead fish floating on the surface is an unsightly scene. The cause of such events, often occuring during seasonal temperature changes, is a process known as pond turnover. Fortunately this scenario can be avoided. Aeration greatly decreases the risk of fish kills due to pond turnover.
